LIFE ON HOUSEBOAT AMAZON

Our Houseboat! We were very excited to meet Capitão Elival when they went to Brazil in May, 2016 to prepare for this expedition.

We used canoes like these to conduct daily research along the igarapés (small canals).

Canoes were piloted by local guides aiding researchers in search of saki monkeys.

At night, Dr. Marsh, her team and the crew slept on the ground floor of the boat and in some very small cabins above. During the day, the area was transformed into a floating research station.

Paolo Vanzolini was a Brazilian scientist and composer: The saki monkey studied during this expedition was named in his honor in 1987 as Pithecia (pie-THEE-cee-a) vanzolinii (van-zo-LEE-nee-i).
